Todd Edward Dillard replied to jeff herman's discussion DO YOU PAY ATTENTION TO EMAILS PROMOTING NEW BOOKS? in the group Book Promotion
"I did a reading once with a guy that pulled my contact info from the emails we exchanged with the emcee and pasted them onto his books' email lists. I don't read the emails anymore, they immediately go in the trash bin. "

Todd Edward Dillard replied to jeff herman's discussion ARE DOOMSDAY THEMES FACING DOOMSDAY? in the group Science Fiction and Fantasy
"Any monsters/magic in a modern setting is considered a sub-genre of fantasy called urban fantasy, of which vampires and zombies are a sub-sub-genre. And love/sex-based plots are Romance-->sub-genre fantasy--> sub-sub-genre urban fantasy. "

Todd Edward Dillard replied to jeff herman's discussion ARE DOOMSDAY THEMES FACING DOOMSDAY? in the group Science Fiction and Fantasy
"We've gone from urban fantasy, to urban fantasy romance, to trashy vampire fantasy, with an interlude through poetry novels, a short stop off at angel fiction, back to urban fantasy, a dash of steampunk, to a growing heap of dystopian, with a…"

Todd Edward Dillard replied to jeff herman's discussion DO STANDARD TEXTBOOKS AND APPROVED Y/A BOOKS BRAINWASH YOUTH? in the group Children's Books and YA
"I had a conversation this weekend with my 12-yr-old niece, after I pulled a stack of books out of my bag. (I was staying with her fam for the weekend.) Her: "Why do you have so many books?" Me: "Because I like to read, but sometimes…"

Todd Edward Dillard replied to Siggy Buckley's discussion What makes 50 Shades of grey so sellable? in the group Book Lovers
"A book is not the sum of its writing style, but its story, and how that story interacts with its targeted market. "50 Shades" hit the Upper East Side stay-at-home-mom/trophy wife market and grew successful from there. There are lots…"

Todd Edward Dillard replied to jeff herman's discussion SHOULD WE MAKE KIDS WATCH TV & PLAY COMPUTER GAMES TO KEEP THEM FROM READING? in the group Children's Books and YA
"1. This would be a badass book idea. 2. Honestly, I think authors should sit down and watch TV and play video games like a kid would every once in a while. Sometimes the adult descriptions of what kids wear, say, and do make me cringe."

Todd Edward Dillard replied to jeff herman's discussion DO YOU SHOW YOUR WORK TO KIDS BEFORE PITCHING IT? in the group Children's Books and YA

Todd Edward Dillard replied to jeff herman's discussion WHO IS THE NEW ISAAC ASIMOV? in the group Science Fiction and Fantasy
"Well, post Asimov you already have Kurt Vonnegut. Neil Gaiman has a huge following, same for Neil Stephenson. Paolo Bacigalupi has written some excellent sci-fi, though he's very new. China Melville's up there, and I'm be really…"

Todd Edward Dillard replied to Janet White's discussion How to publish an African ABC picture book to use as a fundraiser for Ugandan street children? in the group Children's Books and YA
"To answer your questions: 1. I don't know of any agents that'd pick up a non-profit book for a niche market like this. These are the kind of projects that you do parallel to a non-profit, so I'd look into Ugandan non-profits focused…"

Why are there so many thumbs down for the Children's Books Group? Jerks.

I write. I'm blunt. My mom and friends and lover think I'm creative. I've been wanting to be a writer since I was six, listening to O.P.P and sketching out raps in a green diary imprinted with pink lilacs. I have an MFA in writing, which regularly falls casualty to the question: "Oh, what do you plan to do with that?" at cocktail parties. I dream big and I write small. Plaid. I type with four fingers but over 60 words a minute. I'm interested in Middle Grade, YA, Teen, Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi, Thrillers, and that newish kind of anti-lit started with Russell Edson and O'Toole and Vonnegut and seen now in the likes of Simic and Ben Marcus and Roberto Bolano.

Boom.
